Enjoying a natural product

It will be useful to know something about the properties of wood when you lay out your garden; what do you need to take into account, and when is something normal - or abnormal? Some properties are intrinsic to wood, whilst you might think that you have received wood of an inferior quality.

Resin

Garden wood ‘works' during machining and storage, and this results in the exudation of resin from softwood; this is normal. You can carefully scrape off the resin or remove it with turpentine.

Mould and bluish stains

Bluish stains can appear on the surface of the wood, especially in hotter periods. This mould does not affect the strength of the wood, and the mould can be washed of with great ease. But if you don't do anything, then the rain will wash away the mould for you.

Variations in colour

Every tree is different, and the shape, tint and dimensions are never the same. Consequently variations in colour are only logical. Moreover, colour variations can also develop during processing (for example, impregnation). However, over the course of time the colour variations disappear in the sun.

Wood preservation

Untreated spruce and pine has no protection from insects and wood rot. Impregnation by immersion, spraying or painting the wood does not offer adequate protection. For this reason Bear County's products undergo vacuum impregnation, whereby the salts are pressed into the wood under high pressure. This is repeated a couple of times with a chromium-free impregnant, thereby giving your wood long-term protection.

Cracks

The differences in the density of wood are such that it never contracts and expands at the same rate. This can result in the development of visible cracks. However, these have no effect on the structural properties of the wood.

Salt on pregnated wood

Wood impregnated under vacuum contains impregnation salts which prevent attack by moulds and insects. Sometimes you may see green or white stains; this is resin that has been coloured by the salts, and has no effect on the durability of the wood.
